As a die-hard fan (pun intended) of action movies, there is nothing more satisfying than watching a well-planned action sequence. After all, who wouldn’t want to watch a group of fearless performers, choreographers and cinematographers bring a well-thought action scene to life?

Although, there are a plethora of action movies out there (mostly, a lot of unnecessary ones); however, only a few managed to strike a chord with the audiences’ heart like these have. Thus, bringing you our list of top 10 Hollywood action movies of all time in no particular order:

Rambo- First blood

 1. Rambo- First blood (1982)

If there was a list of best action movies that could be termed as the ‘trendsetters’, then Rambo-first blood would definitely be at the very top. Although, the entire Rambo franchise is equally amazing; however, it is the first blood that is in a whole different league. First blood features a battered Vietnam War veteran trying to survive in the real world; a place which Rambo finds much more difficult than a battlefield.

Ong-bak

 2. Ong-bak (2003)

If you enjoy watching some good old hand-to-hand combat action with perfectly executed action sequences, then ong-bak is the one for you! This movie introduced us to two of the best things in the world of action- Tony Jaa and Muay Thai martial arts. Also, remember that most of the scenes that you watch are executed by Tony Jaa for real (the dude’s punching the bad guys for real).

John Wick

 3. John Wick (2014)

This is the very first movie from the hopefully long list of sequels in the John Wick franchise. Although, all of the 3 installments of this franchise are equally awesome; but let’s not forget the very-first film where it all began- John Wick (2014). This is the movie where Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves created the perfect mix of action and drama.

John wick is a retired legendary assassin grieving the death of his wife when some thugs decide to kill his dog. Now, there’s nothing more for him to do than kill them one-by-one at a frigging point-blank range.

Seven Samurai

 4. Seven Samurai (1954)

Seven Samurai is probably the oldest film on our list today, but that doesn’t make this movie less superior than any other action film. This movie is legendary director Akira Kurosawa’s masterpiece and has made a name for itself because of its skillfully crafted action sequences. Hollywood did try to remake this movie in the form of ‘the magnificent seven’ but it couldn’t compare to the original movie in any possible way. Seven Samurai is a jam-packed action movie with brilliantly choreographed fight scenes and intricately woven characters.

Die Hard

 5. Die Hard (1988)

Die hard is unarguably one of the best Hollywood action movies of all time. Other than its well-crafted action sequences, the movie also features one of the best on-screen villains in the form of Alan Rickman. Die Hard didn’t just transform Bruce Willis into one of the top action heroes but also set a new benchmark for future action movies. As far as the synopsis of the movies goes, John McClane played by Bruce Willis visits his wife’s office to reconnect with her. However, as fate would have it, he has to fight his way through a whole bunch of terrorists before he could win back the love of his life. (P.S. Yes it is a Christmas movie)

oldboy

 6. Oldboy (2013)

Old boy is not only one of the best South Korean action flicks of all time but also an important cinematic achievement that paved way for the future films in the action genre (I saw the devil, man from nowhere, etc.). Such is this masterpiece that it is almost impossible to write a good synopsis without giving away the plot. However, what I can tell you is that this movie is more than just any other action flick; it is cinematic art at its finest; a psychological thriller; hammer-fused wreckage, which will surely leave you asking for more in the end. This is what puts old boy amongst the best Netflix series and movies of all time.

Predator

 7. Predator (1987)

In 1987, John McTiernan directed one of the best action movies in the form of the “predator”. This movie features otherworldly action sequences. The fight scenes between the prime Arnold Schwarzenegger and an intergalactic alien are too good to pass. Although, the predator franchise has deviated and deteriorated over the years; however, the original movie is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Kill Bill Volume 1

 8. Kill Bill Volume 1. (2003)

Over the last few decades, Quentin Tarantino has given us many classic masterpieces, but none compared to the Kill Bill Volume 1 in terms of the action troupes. The action sequences in this movie are simply out of this world (Remember the mind-boggling Eighty-Eight fight sequence?). I would have also included the Kill Bill Volume 2; however, that part is more of drama when you compare it with the first one (which is non-stop action)!

Ip Man

 9. Ip Man (2008)

Donnie Yen featured in IP Man as Bruce Lee’s martial arts trainer. Although, this film is a loosely-based biographical film produced in Hong Kong; however, the main motive of this film, as projected by its creators is nothing but deliver some of the finest choreographed action sequences.

Mad Max: Fury Road

 10. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

This 2015 version of the post-apocalyptic world is nothing short of calculated chaos at its finest. Mad Max: Fury Road is the dream project of George Miller, who directed, co-produced, and co-wrote this film. The lead ensemble boasts the likes of Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, who acted their part perfectly. The story revolves around Max and Furiosa, who plan to overthrow the tyrant controlling the wasteland.
